7. Give Us This Day

Of the phrases in the Lord’s prayer, “give us today our daily bread,” may be the one most likely to be misunderstood. Yes, our heavenly Father invites us to bring our daily needs to Him, focusing on needs rather than wants. But a closer look at the parallel passage for Matthew 6 in Luke 11 and Jesus’ broader teaching in John 6 shows that “daily bread” doesn’t primarily mean bread at all – it is Jesus Himself we should be asking for more of each and every day – trusting Him more, seeking Him more and celebrating the spiritual and eternal hope we have in Him alone! “Give us today more of YOU, more of Your Spirit, Lord!” That is the living bread we most desperately need.
