“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.” Romans 12:6
How can we obey this verse if we don’t understand spiritual gifts? 1 Corinthians 12:1 says, “concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.” Spiritual gifts are supernatural abilities from the Holy Spirit. Every Christian believer has at least one gift, maybe two or three. No believer has all the gifts. But no believer is left without a gift.
These are different from our natural abilities but usually integrate well with them. These are supernatural! They are divine enablements through which the Holy Spirit empowers believers to build up the church for the glory of God.
“And there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good… All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills…” 1 Corinthians 12:6-7,11
There are three primary lists of spiritual gifts in the Bible – 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12 and Ephesians 4. There is some overlap between these lists but none of them is meant to be exhaustive or complete. You have a spiritual gift (or two or three). So use it to build up the church and serve the Lord who gave you that gift!
