5. You are a Witness

John the Baptist came in direct fulfillment of Isaiah 40:3 – as the voice in the wilderness, preparing the way of the LORD. All four gospels make this connection, which should give us strong motivation to understand Isaiah 40 (and what follows). John the Baptist was not alone in testifying to the divinity and glory of Jesus. He was the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge to the New Testament apostles. God the Father and God the Spirit also testified to the divinity of Jesus at His baptism. But now it is the Church that is called to testify, serving as witnesses before our neighbors and the nations that Jesus Christ is Lord!
