“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” Hebrews 10:24
Have you noticed how your passion for things tends to settle down? Can you even remember your new year’s resolution for 2018? Exactly. We start a new exercise program and after a few days give up on it. We start a new diet – no, we learned that lesson a long time ago. We start a new Bible reading plan and promise to stick with it this time…
Think about the new habits you have formed. What made the difference between the ones you stuck with and the ones that were just good intentions? I bet you had someone beside you to “stir you up to love and good works.” Having a friend beside you makes all the difference. (Visit a small group this week!)
The image above is from Blanket Tampa Bay. This is a ministry to the homeless in our city that serves people every Monday night. Here is how the founder describes the genesis of this ministry:
“Blanket Tampa Bay was started in 2015 when the church I was attending gave each family $100 with the idea of doing something good and coming back together in January to talk about what we did and how we used the money. I told my husband I wanted to use the money to buy blankets for the homeless.” (Keep reading)
That unnamed church is Oakwood. Three years ago a generous gift was given to use for the Kingdom (not operating expenses). The elders decided to give that money directly to the people of Oakwood – literally handing out one hundred dollar bills. The only requirement was to use the money for ministry and to come back to share what happened.
Blanket Tampa Bay is one of the more dramatic stories, but there were 99 other God stories. (If you were a part of this BFF campaign, please email your story to me and I’ll be thrilled to share it here on the blog!)
The point is: “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” $100 was a nice catalyst three years ago. What could you do this week to stir someone else up?
